Smartphones, laptops and tablets can be useful learning tools in the classroom; they can also be a source of distraction. In this episode, we discuss alternative policies that faculty and students might adopt to facilitate learning. Recent research on the relative effectiveness of handwritten vs. digital notetaking is also examined.

Nearly all students at Oswego have at least one mobile device. A simple option is for the department to purchase a couple of inexpensive loaner Android tablets. You can find these at pretty much all department stores and electronic stores for $50. (If a single instructor on your school switched to using an OER text, the savings would more than cover the cost for a student to buy one of these 😊.)

John i need your help to work with my Dean. She has evidence that students don’t have devices. She has cases of students who go right to the Dean with complaints. Do you have any suggestions. I think maybe the Dean could send students to the dept. but my dean says that we don’t want to put students on the spot.
